International golf star Jim Furyk and several other celebrities played the North Halton Golf & Country Club course Monday in a fund-raising golf tournament in memory of Steve Duplantis Jr., a popular Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour caddie who died in January.
The Steve Duplantis Memorial Golf Tournament raised approximately $60,000 for his 12-year-old daughter Sierra, and organizers plan to make it an annual event.
Duplantis Jr. was struck and killed by a taxi Jan. 23 near San Diego, California while caddying for Eric Axley at the Buick Invitational. He was 35.
Furyk, who had flown overseas from the British Open the previous night, was joined by fellow PGA Tour players Spencer Levin along with Canadian pros Ian Leggatt and David Morland IV.
A number of PGA Tour caddies, including Fluff Cowan, who used to tote Tiger Woods’ clubs before taking up with Furyk, and Brennan Little, Canadian Mike Weir’s caddie, took part. All were in the area for this week’s Canadian Open at the Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville.
Canadian rocker Tom Cochrane also played in the tournament and performed a few songs for the estimated 200 people in attendance.
“It was a magical day at North Halton,” said Steve Duplantis Sr. “Jim Furyk is a genuinely wonderful person and for him to take the time to come up here and do this, along with so many other people, was fantastic. Even though he fired Stevie, he has a soft spot in his heart for him and Sierra and he had tears in his eyes after he spoke at the dinner.”
Levin recorded the low individual score on the day with a round of 64, also combining with North Halton members Bill Swartz, Bob Hebert and Duplantis Sr. to win the team low net division.
Other celebrites taking part included musician Gil Moore of Triumph, Boston Bruins assistant coach Craig Ramsay and ex-Toronto Maple Leaf Brian Glennie.
Another tournament was held in Florida in March by friends of Duplantis Jr., which raised $27,000 for the Sierra Duplantis Trust Fund in care of the PGA Tour.
Georgetown native David Kotsos, a North Halton club member and NBA Producer for The Score Television Network, compiled a report on the tournament held here this week and it’s expected to be in the sports news channel’s regular rotation today (Friday).
