A third period surge wasn’t enough for Brampton to hold off the Junior A Northmen last Friday (July 4). Orangeville returned home with a 5-4 win and a lock on first place in the Ontario Lacrosse Association standings.
“We’re rolling. The boys are playing well. They’re just anxious for the playoffs to get here and get started,” says coach Matt Sawyer. “Right now we’re just in a waiting mode, ready for the playoffs.”
The Rayburn Construction Northmen started strong in Brampton, jumping out to a 4-0 lead by the end of 40 minutes on goals from Matt McLeod, Jeremy Noble, Jeff Ivey and Brett Ritchie.
Momentum quickly shifted in favour of the Excelsiors in the third, as they scored four successive goals in little more than seven minutes.
Noble provided the eventual game-winner with less than four minutes remaining. Nick Rose recorded the win in net.
“We won it by one, which we were happy to do that on the road,” Sawyer shares.
That, he notes, was the last regular season game that mattered, other than momentum. Those two points were enough to solidify the Northmen’s reign at the top of the league.
Orangeville followed up its Brampton win by crushing the Orillia Kings 19-2 in front of a hometown crowd Sunday evening.
“The score speaks for itself,” Sawyer responds when asked to comment on the game.
The Kings managed to keep pace with Northmen on the scoreboard for the first half-period or so, but it was all Orangeville after that. At the end of 20 minutes the home team had a 6-2 advantage — they added five more in the second and eight in the third while keeping the visitors off the score sheet.
Goals were spread out amongst the team for that one, with three from Todd Hosmer, two each from Ritchie, Noble, Craig England, McLeod and Matt McNutt. Andrew Suitor, B.J. Gerrie, Sean Gillies, Ivey, Glen Bryan and Stephen Keogh provided single tallies.
