Gymnasts strike gold at Ontario championships

Members of the Halton Hills Gymnastics Centre brought back some hardware from the recent Gymnastics Ontario Champion-ships in Mississauga.

Ryan Oehrlein earned a gold medal on parallel bars and a bronze on rings, while Riley Dodds took top spot on the high bar and silver on the parallel bars, along with a bronze for all-around placement in his category.

Dodds and Marc de Lestard qualified for the Eastern Canadian Championships to be held in Montreal May 8-11.

HHGC individual highlights included:

Level 2, Under-10

Ryan Oehrlein-- 1st parallel bars; 3rd rings; 4th vault, high bar; 6th all around

Andrew Pietras-- 4th parallel bars; 6th vault, high bar; 7th all-around

Level 2, 10-12

Eric Shieh-- 4th vault; 5th pommel, parallel bars 7th all-around

Level 3, Under-13

Zachary Brautigan-- 4th vault; 22nd all-around

Riley Dodds-- 1st high bar; 2nd parallel bars; 3rd all-around; 6th floor, pommel

Gabriel Reitz-- 4th vault; 19th all around

National Results

Marc de Lestard-- 11th all-around, with best score of 12.0 on vault

Alex Bowmer-- 15th all-around, with best score of 12.2 on vault

Also recently, girls from the HHGC competed at the Elmira Invitational in Horseheads, N.Y.

The local gymnasts scored first place in Level 7 team competition and runner-up honours in the Level 8 team category.

Placing first overall in their respective divisions were Mikaela Telschow, Lauren Rock and Emily Krusky, with Caralyn Hale taking third overall.

Also, based on the results of the previous provincial qualifiers to date, Xhosa Baker, Melanie Butler and Emily Krusky qualified for the Elite Ontario competition.

Bridget Irving, Lauren Rock and Sara Villani are headed for the provincial championships in May.

Emily Krusky-- 1st bars, beam, floor, all-around; 4th vault

Xhosa Baker-- 2nd vault, floor; 4th all-around; 5th bars, beam

Melanie Butler-- 3rd vault; 7th all-around; 9th bars, beam; 12th floor

Level 7, 13 & Over

Caralyn Hale-- 2nd floor, 3rd all-around; 4th bars; 5th beam; 6th vault

Alandra Telschow-- 2nd beam; 5th floor, all-around; 10th bars

Marissa Parker-- 3rd beam; 4th floor; 7th all-around; 11th bars; 13th vault

Level 7, 11-12

Lauren Rock-- 1st vault, bars, beam, all-around; 3rd floor

Shannon Daley-- 4th beam; 7th bars, all-around; 9th floor; 14th vault

Rachel Truscott-- 2nd bars, floor; 9th all-around; 15th beam; 17th vault
