Local speed skaters fare well at meet
Tuesday December 30 2008

The sport of speed skating is making inroads in the North Halton area and the local club recently organized its first-ever competition in Milton, which included a half dozen athletes from Halton Hills.
Seventy youth competitors from seven clubs around the region took part in the Milton Speed Skating Club’s inaugural Mini Meet at the Milton Sports Centre and skaters from the host team turned in some record times.
Georgetown’s Sam McEachran, 15, broke the one-minute benchmark in the juvenile boys’ 500m race in a time of 0:59.68, the second fastest time for a Milton club member over that distance. He also had second-place finishes in the 777m and 1,000m races, as well as a third in the 500m.
Phillip Geng of Georgetown took top spot in three of his events in the junior division, including a personal best in the 500m in which he nearly cracked the minute mark, clocking in at 1:00.25.
Abby McEachran raced to a second-place result in the 500m, while fellow midget division teammate Lydia Geng placed third in the 333m.
Acton’s Karenna Haefner posted a victory in the bantam girls’ 222m event and was runner-up in three others. Charlotte Geng, a peewee competitor who has registered times fast enough to qualify for Ontario Cup races, won the 333m race in Milton and was third in the 222m and 111m.
Another member of the Milton club from Georgetown, Kelsey Carr, competed at an Ontario Cup event in Belleville on the same weekend that her teammates were skating...
