Fire guts Georgetown home
Monday January 5 2009
By Lisa Tallyn, staff writer

John Martin, Chief Officer of Operations, with Halton Hills Fire Protection and Prevention Services, said the fire call came into the department at about 8:20 p.m.
He said when fire crews arrived heavy smoke and flames were coming from the home, and all tenants in the two-unit rented bungalow had gotten out safely.

Martin said fire crews got the fire under control in about an hour, but some firefighters remained at the home until about 1 a.m. Monday dousing hotspots.
The cause of the fire that resulted in about $300,000 damage is still under investigation. Martin said they are focusing their attention on the furnace room in the house as that appears to be where the fire started.
They have called in investigators from the Technical Standards Safety Association and are looking at the furnace and water heater to determine if either caused the fire.
Martin said they are also investigating if there were working smoke alarms in the house. Preliminary investigation shows there was only one smoke alarm in the home and it didn't have any batteries in it.
Martin said the tenants of the home did not have insurance. He said they had places to stay Sunday night.
One of the tenants was contacted and said he did not...
