Entries are needed now for the Georgetown Horticultural Society’s Heritage Flower Show on September 12 in the Georgetown Market Place.
Public participation is encouraged for this event, part of the Society’s 90th anniversary celebrations. But early registration is required, because exhibitors must be in possession of their entry for three months. The competition is open to all residents of any age.
The Georgetown Horticultural Society was formed in 1920 and held its first flower show the following year.
“In planning the September Heritage Plant Show, we have tried to use as many of the original categories as possible,” said Heather Bosman, co-organizer. “However, some of the flowers, very popular 90 years ago, such as annual asters, are less widely grown today so we have had to make some adjustments.
“We have amended the schedule of classes to include vegetables and fruits and there will be a special class for heritage tomatoes, another for traditional pot marigolds (calendula), the Society’s emblem for its 90th anniversary, and even some decorative classes such as flower arrangements in tea cups.”
Bosman has some pot marigold seeds available.
As in the 1921 Flower Show, there will be exhibits by Georgetown florists, and monetary prizes ranging from $1 to $5 will be awarded to the winners of the various classes.
The rules are posted on the Society’s website, www.geohort.com (click on Heritage Plant Show under Contests tab) or call Bosman, 905-877-1533.
